A hen blackcap ( Sylvia atricapilla ) has appeared on the fat-ball feeder in the garden. She is a drab but quite pretty, though she actually has a hazelnut-coloured cap... ( the cock has the black cap ). Her long, thin beak seems well-suited for poking through the mesh of the feeder and she feeds for periods of five or more minutes. I haven't yet seen her depart; I wonder where she nests?

This is the first time I have seen a blackcap in two or more years and only the third time ever; my first encounter with the type was with a cock blackcap who sat in a bucket of sand in the garden for an hour until his wife arrived and carted him off home...
