This photo has been floating around in our photo box for as long as I can recall, but still no-one has any idea whence it came or whom it represents.
It shows a Civil Defence Service unit standing in front of a ladder-bearing lorry. A small oval plate on the lorry's wing reads "7139". This is my only clue; it looks like a Northern Ireland Road Transport Board plate, which would date the photo between 1935 and 1948.
Front row left is a Senior Warden, I think, with three chevrons. The chap third from the left has an emblem over his chevrons; Head Warden? Centre in the front row has insignis high on the shoulder, presumably WO or Officer equivalent.
What is spooky is the chap on the left in the back row; is that me?
